Boat Explorer smartwatch: A review after 6 months of use

This was my first smartwatch. My brother bought me this one for Rs 2.5k/-. I had some other choices, namely Boat Enigma, Storm, Colorfit Pro 2/3 etc. Here goes my review.

1. Build: Most important one I believe is the glass cover. They mention this one to be 2.5D glass (not a Gorilla Glass). After 6 months of usage, there is a single minor scratch which does not hinder the display, and I don't notice it when the display is on. The silicon strap is soft and sturdy and never went off. Looks classy.

2. Specification: Other than usual activity tracking, it comes with a GPS in built. There is heart rate monitoring function as well. There is no BP measurement, SpO2 measurement. While connected to the smartphone via bluetooth, it can show WhatsApp notification, text messages, weather forecast etc.

3. Touch: It is not super responsive, and frequently requires repeated touches to execute a function. But touch sensitivity is comparable to others in this class.

4. Display: It is a small one at 1.3", still large enough for a functional dial with all relevant informations. Resolution is very poor and pixels are visible. This is an LCD panel, and does not have always on display.

5. Battery: Charges from nearly zero to full by 2-3 hours. Once fully charged it used to last around 7 days, now it lasts 6-6.5 hours. If one is using GPS, activity tracking, timer etc, it may discharge faster, by within 5 days. There is a vibrator in this watch for notifications, activity tracking etc. It uses a lot of battery.

6. Watch faces: There are 50-60 watch faces, most are funky. Some are information loaded, some are just the dial.

Problems I faced:
a. Lack of function: It cannot track calories burnt while doing gym.

b. Lack of watch faces: Classic watch faces with dials that contain relevant informations like date, time, day, steps taken, calories burnt (which can be easily done for the adequate size of the display) are scarce. But there are hardly 4 such watch faces and none of them suit my taste. It was a disappointment. Very few watch faces have been updated.

c. Corrupted watch faces: Watch faces became corrupted. One face with classic dial suddenly stopped showing second arm, once the minute arm was missing too.

d. Time format: It cannot show time in AM or PM (12 hour format). Only 24 hour format is supported. I tried reinstalling the Boat Progear app. But this didn't help.

e. Strap allergy: The strap caused allergy at the wrist for initial few weeks and it improved later after regular sensitisation.

f. Slow wake function: There is wake function that lights up the display when wrist is rotated to see the time. Firstly, this works only for 60% of times, that means 4 out of 10 times will not wake the screen. Secondly, there is a delay (~1 sec) while waking. This is quite annoying in hours of hurry. It becomes more annoying when the screen does not wake up and one has to manually switch on the screen.

g. No mic/ No text back: If connected through bluetooth with a smartphone, one can receive notifications for call and messages, but no mic and speaker available to carry out the call from the watch itself and one cannot reply text messages from here. Call can be disconnected from the watch. There is music control available too.

Final verdict:
This is basically a fitness tracker with watch functions only. Irony is that, other than heart rate monitoring, everything else can be tracked in one's smartphone using appropriate apps in a much better way. For me, I was looking this as my primary watch that carries out fitness tracking too. Again, as a watch, the buggy and slow display, absence of proper watch faces made it more unpleasant.

Practically speaking, if one is looking for a digital watch that couples as a fitness tracker, save some money and buy the one that gives a better display, always on feature, smooth touch response, calling facilities, text back and voice command features. Else, these entry level smartwatches are not at all smart. They neither make a good fitness tracker, nor make a good watch.

Case u stylus vs Apple Pencil for iPad

After buying an iPad, the first utility thing must be the pencil, particularly for the students. There are few third party stylus pens available in the market (Case U, Tukzer, Aboutthefit (ATF), Liramark etc). Today let me discuss their pros and cons. Before I start, let me clarify, Case U, Tukzer, ATF are basically the same product with different brand names. For the next discussion, I will be referring them as Case U. 2nd generation Apple Pencil will be compared. 1. Build: Apple Pencil is solidly uniform and weight is very well balanced so that it feels perfect in hand. Case U is slightly heavy at the rear end. This is a matter of personal preferences, but I liked the rear heaviness. 2. Tip: All these pencils offer a similar feedback while writing. Not much of a difference. There is minimal lag, and quite precise altogether. Case U upgraded provided two extra tips in the package. Tukzer usually provides one extra tip. Do check if your package comes with replacement tips. One can p...

Click Renaissance Carbon

Pen: Click Renaissance Carbon , Medium nib I bought this pen at Kolkata Book Fair 2024 . The way this pen looks is a love_at_first_sight. I could not refrain myself from buying this one. There are good, and there are bad things. Let me summarise them. 1. Build: Ebonite body with a matt finish adds to the feel of holding this pen. At the same time, this is also light. Grip section is comfortable. This has a 3 in 1 filling mechanism, which is a boon to the practicality. 2. In the box: Came with the 2 cartridges of blue ink (standard size), and a screw type converter (I am happy that they did not bundle this with a piston type filler which is very un-user-friendly). 3. Design: This is why I could not resist to buy. The matt finish black with golden rings at the cap with a golden clip, everything together is beautiful to look. What is don't like for most Indian made pens is the clip. Looks very cheap, and the way 'click' is written on the clip adds on to the cheapness. They ...
